GOVERNANCE REFORMS AND ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION: PATHWAYS FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN NIGERIA

Nigeria remains one of the largest economies in Africa and possesses enormous human and natural resource endowments. Despite these advantages, the country's economic growth has been constrained by excessive dependence on crude oil exports, weak institutional frameworks, corruption, policy inconsistency, and infrastructural deficits. This paper examines the role of governance reforms and economic diversification as complementary pathways to achieving sustainable economic growth in Nigeria. Drawing on institutional theory and evidence from international development literature, the study explores how transparency, accountability, rule of law, anti-corruption measures, decentralisation, and digital governance can enhance economic performance and attract foreign direct investment. The paper further argues that diversification into agriculture, manufacturing, technology, renewable energy, and services is critical for reducing vulnerability to external shocks and promoting inclusive development. The study concludes that governance reforms and economic diversification are mutually reinforcing strategies capable of stimulating sustainable growth, employment generation, innovation, and improved living standards. The paper recommends strengthening institutional capacity, expanding digital governance initiatives, promoting private-sector participation, and creating an enabling environment for investment and entrepreneurship.
